THE OHIO EDUCATION GADFLY: CORRECTION

A Bi-Weekly Bulletin of News and Analysis from the Thomas B. Fordham Institute
Correction to Volume 2, Number 7. March 26, 2008

————————————————————————————————————————

In yesterday's Ohio Education Gadfly we ran an editorial by Terry Ryan entitled "Mr. Governor, What are you fighting for?" In the piece we used the following statistic: In 2006-2007, 183,000 students in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton attended schools rated "academic watch" or "academic emergency," the two lowest-possible performance categories.

This sentence should have read as follows:

In 2006-07, 46 percent of the 183,000 public and charter school students in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton attended schools rated "academic watch" or "academic emergency," the two lowest-possible performance categories.

We first shared this statistic, accurately, in our summary of student achievement data in August 2007 (see here), and we have used it, accurately, most recently in the executive summary of Fund the Child: Bringing Equity, Autonomy, and Portability to Ohio School Finance (see here).

We are sorry for any confusion this may cause readers and thank a reader for pointing out the error to us. We have corrected our online version as well (see here).

Nationally and in Ohio, the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, along with its sister organization the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, strives to close America's vexing achievement gaps by raising standards, strengthening accountability, and expanding high-quality education options for parents and families. As a charter-school sponsor in Ohio, the Foundation joins with schools to affirm a relentless commitment to high expectations for all children, accountability for academic results and transparency and organizational integrity, while freeing the schools to operate with minimal red tape. The Foundation and Institute are neither connected with nor sponsored by Fordham University.
